Louisville, KY — Anne Wood Spaulding, 97, died peacefully at home in Louisville, Ky., on July 13, 2014. She was born in Andover, Mass. on October 20, 1916, and was the daughter of the late William M. Wood Jr. and Edith G. Robinson. Her stepfather was the late Harry Boone Porter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen P. Spaulding; her brother, William M. Wood II; her stepbrother, Rev. Harry Boone Porter Jr.; and her son, Allen P. Spaulding Jr.
She attended both the Ballard and Collegiate Schools in Louisville. Graduating from St. Timothy’s School near Baltimore, Md., she matriculated to Vassar College, Class of 1938. Anne left for an international school in Geneva, Switzerland. Returning to the States, she enrolled in an interior design course in New York City. During that time, she met and married Allen P. Spaulding, who later became a distinguished R.A.F. pilot. Her commitment to the Red Cross during WWII brought her to Washington, D.C., as a nurse’s aid.
Love of animals and nature passionately engaged Anne Spaulding. From her life in Eden, N.Y., managing a dairy farm, studying geology at the University of Arizona near the ranch she and Allen Spaulding enjoyed in Amado, Ariz., to a life in Green Pond, S.C., where she provided a haven for wildlife. In the late 1960, she found time to help her husband build a house on Cuttyhunk, Mass., and set aside property to be kept wild. Her recent years in Louisville included the restoring of a boxwood garden maze her mother had designed.
Anne Spaulding is survived by three of her children, Anne (Alan) Rose of New York City, Frederick (Karen) Spaulding of Eden, Van Spaulding of Santa Barbara, Calif., and her daughter-in-law, Holland (Allen) Spaulding of Wilmington, Del. Also surviving are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Phyllis Smith, Mary Anne Trombetti, Martha Jackson, and Michelle Gambelle, who cared for her during her last years.
