Barbara was born in Malden, to the late Eugene Leonard Shapiro and Doris Irene (Claff) Shapiro. She graduated from Boston University in 1967 where she received a Bachelor’s degree in business. She loved to garden, paint, and travel. She was also a student of history and an avid reader. She adored her family and her pets and enjoyed cooking and baking for them.
Her parents were founding members of the Temple Tiferet Israel in Malden, MA, where she led the youth group as a teenager. As a young woman, she taught ESL to immigrants in Boston. After college, Barbara went on to work in international business before becoming a homemaker. She also served as an office manager when her children left home and advocated for foster children as a CASA volunteer.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Stanley E. DeRocher of Cedar Park, Texas; her brother, Mark Shapiro of Arlington; her daughter, Sarah E. Moore and husband, Andrew, of Austin, TX, her son, Seth A. DeRocher and wife McKensie of Cedar Park, TX, as well as five grandchildren Alanna, Adam, David, Emerson and Liam.
After a private burial, family and friends may attend her memorial service at 11am on Friday, September 7, at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home located at 3125 North Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78705. In lieu of gifts, memorial donations can be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (https://www.theaftd.org/).
