Andover — Cathleen was born in Andover, Mass., and graduated cum laude from Abbot Academy. After obtaining her B.A. in English from Smith College, she received her M.A. from Boston College. Her career was full, teaching for eight years in secondary schools and later becoming the staff writer-editor for Scholastic Magazine and later Assistant to the Editor of the Norfolk District of the Massachusetts Medical Society. She married William Elmer in 1953. Their son, Edward, was born in 1958, and Mrs. Elmer turned to freelancing at home, first as a writer-editor for Ginn and Co. and Houghton Mifflin; later, as a book reviewer for the New York Times, the Boston Herald and Herald American, the Baltimore Sun, and the Washington Times.
Mrs. Elmer was a zestful swimmer well into her 70s. She is survived by her son, Edward B. Elmer, MD (Laura); six grandchildren; two sisters, Anne M. Laskey and Constance Siverman and a brother, Attorney Thomas D. Burns.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Celebration of Life with Communion Service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 360 South Main in Andover.
Internment service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 175, Thornton, N.H.
