Elizabeth's Story

Elizabeth Cavicchi West of North Andover passed away on December 12, 2016, at the age of 97. She was a resident of the Edgewood Retirement Community.
Elizabeth (Betty) was born in Somerville, Mass., and grew up in Woburn, Mass. A graduate of Woburn High School, she went on to graduate from Simmons College in 1941 with a B.S. degree in Nutrition and Institutional Management, and later earned a Certificate for Graduate Dietitian from the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Following graduation from Simmons, Betty worked as a dietitian at Peter Brent Brigham Hospital, establishing and supervising the kitchen for the private pavilion. She also worked for the United Fruit Company, where she gave cooking demonstrations.

Betty and her late husband, George V. West, MD, were married in 1944 and moved to Andover in October of 1950, where she set up home for their family. She was a den leader of a local Cub Scout pack, served on the board for the Home for Little Wanderers, and volunteered as a makeup artist for the Children’s Theatre Workshop. She was a member of the Andover Garden Club, a longtime member of the November Club, a member of the North Andover Country Club, a member of the board for the Methuen Music Hall, and an active member for 53 years of South Church, where she served on several boards and committees.
Following the passing of her husband in 1974, Betty studied to become a learning disabilities tutor at the Landmark School and through the Andover program, and for several years worked as a learning disabilities tutor for the Windham/Pelham School District. Other activities she enjoyed included traveling and attending the symphony and theatre.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Richard, and two brothers who died in infancy. She is survived by her children, Richard West and his wife, Donna; David West and his wife, Vickie; Sandy Bennert and her husband, Donald; and Carol-Georgine West; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Meadows and Garden View at Edgewood Retirement Community for their devoted and loving care.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at 11 a.m. at South Church in Andover. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the South Church or to a charity of your choice.
