Ernest "Ernie" George Matton passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016, at age 79, in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara Ann Matton of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; his son, Gregory E. Matton, Greg’s wife, Teresa K. Matton, and their children, Alexis and Kyle Matton; his daughter-in-law, Sheryl Matton, wife of his son, E. Stephen Matton, and their daughter, Caroline Matton; and his brother, John Matton. Ernie’s two other sons, E. Stephen Matton and Peter M. Matton pre-deceased their father. Ernie was the son of the late Ernest and Mary Zita Matton of Andover, Mass.
Ernie loved all of his family and was especially proud of his three children and his grandchildren. He was a wonderful role model for his family throughout his life. He enjoyed sports, having played baseball for Phillips Academy, Andover, and for Merrimack College. He also enjoyed playing golf throughout his life. Ernie attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Merrimack College, where he earned his business degree. He also earned his Master's in Business Administration from Georgia State University.
Ernie and his family moved from Andover, Mass., to Atlanta, Ga., in 1969. He worked for Rollins, Inc. for 21 years, retiring from Rollins in 2003. Upon retirement, Ernie and his wife, Barbara, moved to Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Ernie embraced all of his family and a wide circle of friends, all of whom were influenced and inspired by his love, kindness and generosity of spirit. His wonderful presence in our lives is manifested in so many tangible and intangible ways, all of which give us the strength and courage to honor his memory in the days ahead. His passing saddens all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and church community.
In Ernie’s memory, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in his name, at https://shop.stjude.org/GiftCatalog/donation.do?cID=14262&pID=24671.
