Evelyn J. (Hall) Darby, 92, a lifelong resident of Andover, Mass., passed away on April 13, 2016, at The Sutton Hill Center in North Andover. Evelyn was proud to have lived her life on what the old timers knew as “Blueberry Corner” on the outer edge of the Ballard Vale section of Andover. She began her education in the Andover school system and graduated from Essex Agricultural School. She went on to further her education receiving a degree in Cosmetology from Wilfred Beauty Academy of Boston. Evie worked for many years as a beautician including almost 40 years as owner/operator of Evelyn’s Beauty Shop in Andover. She also worked for a number of years as a cook at Ernie’s Country Kitchen in Ballard Vale. In her later years, she greatly enjoyed her time as a volunteer in the Purchasing Department at the Andover Town Hall. Her greatest joy was working outside in her yard tending to her numerous flower gardens or mowing the lawn on her ride on tractor. She also enjoyed bringing spirit to the neighborhood by decorating her front porch for every holiday.
Evelyn was the daughter of the late, Edward P. Hall and Marguerite E. (Nelson) Hall, and the widow of Merwyn K. Darby. She will be deeply missed by daughter, Pamela J. Nichols and husband, Arthur of Andover; and son, Ernest M. Darby of Effingham, N.H. She also leaves her grandson, David A. Nichols and granddaughter, Leslie J. Ford and husband, Christopher; as well as five great-granddaughters, Sarah and Kaitlyn Nichols and Alexandria, Reagan and Charlotte Ford; a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Russell Hall, Gordon Hall and Ernest Hall.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sutton Hill Center for their continued care and support over the last 11 months, with a special thank you to those in the Transitional Care Unit, who cared for her in her final days.
