Joan's Story

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA: Joan Cuff passed away peacefully on October 8, 2014 surrounded by her immediate family. Joan was a resident of Norwood and Pocasset, Mass. and Virginia Beach, Va. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John F. “Jack” Cuff; her daughter, Susan E. Herron of Virginia Beach, Va. and sons, J. Christopher Cuff of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Kevin M. Cuff of Andover. She has a brother, Fr. Conrad (James) Harkins, OFM of St. Bonaventure University and St. Petersburg, Fla. She is also survived by four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Joan was born in 1932 in Havertown, Pa. as the daughter of the late James William and Hellen (Longwell) Harkins of Havertown, Pa. She graduated from Haverford High in 1950 and from Rosemont College (PA) with a degree in journalism in 1954. Joan lived in Norwood and Pocasset from 1960 and 1969 respectively. She was a very active member in the Norwood community as a volunteer for the Norwood Women’s Community Center / Thrift Shop and for the Day House. She was a longtime Norwood Town Meeting member, president of the Callahan School PTA and she served on the elected Norwood School Committee from 1976 – 1982. Joan was a 20-year employee of Kinney Vacuum in Canton, Mass.

A private Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on October 10, at St. Gregory the Great of Virginia Beach, Va. with a later Mass of celebratory remembrance to be served on the summer solstice at St. John the Evangelist in Pocasset on her beloved Cape Cod.
