SOUTH YARMOUTH, MA: John Harold "Jack" Gearin, Jr., 84, of Thirwood Place, South Yarmouth, Mass., formerly of Andover, Mass., and Indianapolis, Ind., passed away at his residence on January 18, 2015, surrounded by family.
He is survived by his spouse of 60 years, Mary Lou (Cheney) Gearin; three children and their spouses, John Michael Gearin and wife, Maureen O’Brien Gearin of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ellen Sebasky and husband, Gregory Sebasky of Andover, Mass., John Paul Gearin and wife, Mary Ann (Ogg) Gearin of Berlin, N.J. He was also a loving grandfather to Carolyn, Kristen and Megan Sebasky, Kathleen O'Brien Deutsch, John O'Brien Gearin, Alycia Gearin, Molly O'Brien Gearin, Brendan Gearin, and great-grandson, Justin John Gearin. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Finacom of Shrewsbury.
Jack was born on November 13, 1930, to John and Lillian (Callahan) Gearin of Worcester, Mass.
Jack spent his early days in Worcester, dreaming of becoming an engineer and attending Classical High where he quarterbacked the football team, ran cross country, was a top student, and met his future wife. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute as an Electrical Engineer. In 1954, he married, and joined the Navy, and served overseas as an Ensign on the USS Picking. After his return, he joined Western Electric where he enjoyed a long and storied career, retiring in 1987, finishing his career at NJIT (NJ Institute of Technology). He moved to Cape Cod in 1992, and enjoyed many years of active retired life in the place where he and “ML” most wanted to be.
Jack loved to play golf, sing (with Thirwood Singers) spend time with family, serve his community (in many roles such as mentoring students at WPI, funding the Jacob Sears Library and heading the Thirwood Scholarship Fund), and tinker with cars and electronics.
The family greatly appreciates the compassionate and professional staff at the Thirwood Place, McCarthy Pain Center, Hope Hospice, and Companion Care who provided such wonderful care and comfort to him, especially during the past few months.
