ANDOVER, MA - John D. O'Neil of Andover, Mass., and Southport, Maine, passed away on January 30, 2018, at Maine Medical Center, following a long illness. He was born on March 4, 1935, the son of John O'Neil and Madeline Winslow, in Plymouth, N.H. He attended school in Pittsburg, N.H., and later in Biddeford, Maine, graduating from Lewiston High School in Maine. John served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959, stationed in Napoli, where, he said in retrospect, his Latin courses from high school helped with the Italian language. Following his naval duty, he attended Mt. Ida College, and graduated from the University of Maine (Orono). After college he worked at the Pinette Funeral Home, in Maine. He later moved to Andover, Mass., where he was employed with New York Life. John worked as an advertising salesman at the Andover Townsman, and as a sales manager at the Woburn Town Crier for the next 25 years. During his free time, before and after retirement, he enjoyed gardening, acquiring jewelry, and going to yard sales. The old treasures and furniture obtained from these yard sales, he spent many hours refinishing and repairing. He leaves his wife of 33 years, Carol Lewis O'Neil, of Andover, Mass., and Southport, Maine. He also leaves his step-son, Dr. Cary Caldwell, and his wife, Karen Kassap; and step-grandchildren, Myles, Samuel, and Naomi Caldwell, all of Woodbridge, Conn. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Jana Caldwell, of Boothbay Harbor, and husband, J.H. Russell; and step-grandchildren Markus and Ryan Russell. He leaves his brother, Stephen O'Neil, and wife, Gigi, of Treasure Island, Florida; a daughter, Deidre, who resides in Florida; and another daughter, Kate, who resides in Maine. He is predeceased by his son, John O'Neil Jr.
