Born in Haverhill to the late Renwyck W. and Ola C. (MacLeod) Henderson, Bob was raised on the family farm in West Andover, graduated from Punchard Free School in 1947 and attended Essex Agricultural School in Danvers. He owned a carpentry business, Fitzgerald, Henderson and Porter with two of his brothers-in-law before going into business on his own. He and his wife Jan, bought and renovated a 135-year old house in Ballardvale, taking it down to the studs where they found the bark was still attached. After his retirement, he continued to work with wood and his tools, making hundreds of wooden toys that he sold at church fairs and gave as gifts to family. He thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and for many years oversaw the golf program for the Andover Senior Center where he also helped start the Fix-It program.
He attended Andover Baptist Church for many years where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was a Deacon and church moderator.
