Ruth M. (Rogers)'s Story
Ruth Margaret (Rogers) Lally of North Andover, passed away on August 1, 2017, at the High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill, Mass., shortly after her 105th birthday.
Ruth, the fourth of 11 children, was born on July 9, 1912, the daughter of the late Francis F. and Margaret Louise (Barnes) Rogers. She and her siblings grew up in Somerville and Newton, Mass. Ruth was a devout Roman Catholic and a 1934 graduate of Regis College in Weston, Mass. After college, she worked as a secretary at the Draper Top Woolen Company for several years and later initiated the position of Secretary to the Alumnae Association at Regis College from 1959 to 1966. In 1938 she wed Robert F. Lally, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage. Together they raised their three children in the Auburndale section of Newton, Mass.
In the early 1970s, Ruth and Bob retired to Harwich Port, Mass., where they enjoyed 25 years of golfing at the Cranberry Valley Golf Course, playing bridge with friends, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and Cape Cod Hospital, and entertaining family. Ruth was an avid reader until her eyesight failed and then, through the help of the Perkins Talking Book Library, she listened to books on tape and NPR for the remainder of her life.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, and is survived by her children, Robert Lally, Jr. and his wife, Charlotte of Friday Harbor, Wash., Joan Canterbury of Andover, Mass., and James Lally and his wife, Helen of New York City, N.Y.; as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's Church in Andover on Friday, August 4, 2017. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Harwich Port, Mass.
