Gertrude (Trudy)'s Story

Text size

On June 3, 2016, Gertrude (Long) Witman, 97, peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter, Gretchin. She was born in Gardner to Finnish parents, Phillip and Olga (Muurman) Long. Trudy loved music and was a talented violin, accordion and piano player. During her senior year in high school, she skillfully composed her Class Song. Just a year later, in 1937, she was honored to be chosen Grand Marshall for Gardner's Armistice Day Parade.
Trudy instilled her love of the outdoors in her children and grandchildren. She would organize nature walks to teach them about trees, plants, wildflowers and birds. Of course, children of Finnish descent must also be taught to cross country ski! Among Trudy's other passions were a love of gardening and spending time at her beloved family "farm" in Madison, N.H.
Prior to her marriage, Trudy worked in accounting at Florence Stove in Gardner and then General Foods in Manhattan. During WWII she was employed at Pratt & Whitney in Hartford, Conn.
When her children were older, she worked at the IRS. She proved her dedication to her job when, during a nor'easter, she trekked miles to work wearing her snowshoes!
Retirement found Trudy and husband, Ted, collecting antiques and restoring their 18th century homestead.
Her husband, Theodore R. Witman predeceased her in 2002. Her survivors include her four children, son, Sanders (Peter) and his wife, BJ Witman of Andover; daughter, Kirstin W. Clarke and her husband, Jim, of Andover; son, Theodore D. (Ted) Witman II and his wife, Mary Ellen formerly of Andover; and daughter, Gretchin M. Witman of Montague. Trudy was the proud grandmother (Mummu) of nine adoring grandchildren, Amanda Witman, Sarah Goyette, Samantha Witman-Polk, Elizabeth Clarke, Leigh (Clarke) Hicks, Abigail Clarke, Theodore Witman, Timothy Witman and Katherine Witman-Bowman. In addition, she leaves 15 great-grandchildren, three nephews and dear family friend, Heidi Hansen.
A private family gathering will be held in Madison, N.H.
