ANDOVER, NORTH ANDOVER: Joyce Bisbee Andrews died peacefully on September 25, 2014 at the age of 82.
Joyce was born to Elliot and Dorothy (Winsor) Bisbee on March 31, 1932. She grew up in Vermont and Concord, Mass. and was a resident of Andover and North Andover over the past 60 years. A graduate of Radcliffe College, she was a teacher and then a caring and present mother of four children. In her 40s, she earned a Master’s degree in Psychology from Tufts University. She then worked in the North Andover school system helping to diagnose and place children with special needs. After retiring from the school system, she volunteered as a hospice care provider.
Joyce’s interests were broad, and she cared deeply for her family, her friends, and her community. She served on numerous charitable boards of directors, was President of the Andover League of Women Voters, was a member of the Vestry of Christ Church, and was one of the first female trustees of Middlesex School. She enjoyed traveling, puzzling, and playing sports with family and friends. When no longer able to move about the tennis court, she became an avid ping-pong player with her friends at Edgewood Retirement Community. Always a champion for women’s issues, she was grateful that her granddaughters have opportunities that were not available to her when she was a child. She will be remembered especially for her moral presence, her generous spirit and compassion, her keen intelligence, and her enthusiastic enjoyment of life. She made everyone feel welcome and valued.
Joyce married Jerry Andrews, and they enjoyed 56 fun-filled years together, including the time she lovingly and courageously cared for him through his struggles with Alzheimer’s. She was predeceased by her brother, Frederick (Rick) and her sister, Alice, and is survived by her four children, Chris and his wife, Debbie of Andover, Steve and his wife, Lisa of Andover, Ned and his wife, Darlene Young of Glover, Vt., and Lisa Hooper and her husband, Errol of Greentop, Mo. She is also survived by three brothers, Ethan, John and Tom; four grandchildren, Meg, Chris, Sarah, and Jessica; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 North Ave., Haverhill, MA 01830. A memorial service will be planned for a date to be determined. Arrangements entrusted to the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., North Andover. To sign the family guest book, please visit www.contefuneralhomes.com.
