ANDOVER: Mitchell F. Sawaya of 4270 Fairway Drive, North Port, Fla., formerly of Andover, Mass., passed away at his Florida home on Wednesday, April 15. Mitch was born and raised in the South End of Boston. He graduated from The Mechanics Arts High School of Boston and Northeastern University. He was a World War II veteran. After the war Mitchell started his career with Gillette Company and then for many years worked for Raytheon Company up to his retirement in 1989.
Mitch is survived by his wife, Vivian Batal Sawaya; his son, Mitchell J Sawaya of Manchester, N.H.; his son, Kenneth and daughter-in-law, Grace of Andover, Mass.; and his grandchildren, Gina and Nick, children of Kenneth and Grace, and Mitchell C. (Mack) Sawaya, son of Mitchell J.
He is also survived by older brother, Jim and his wife, Dottie Sawaya of Rockland, Mass.; brother and sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
Mitchell was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Yumna; his twin brother, Ferris; and his sister, Selma (Tootsie), and her son, Anthony Beninati.
He loved to play golf and attend his grandchildren’s activities. His grandchildren were the most important thing in his life. He was always there for his children. He attended the Unitarian Church and was a member of the Andover chapter of the Masons. He was a founding member of the American Lebanese Awareness Association. He was blessed with many dear friends in the Andover and North Port community.
A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, May 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St., Andover, MA 01810. In lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated to the American Lebenese Awareness Association, P.O. Box 292, Lawrence, MA 01842 and “In memory of Mitchel F. Sawaya” to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 5041 Corporate Woods Drive, Suite 245, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
