SOLEBURY, PA: Andover native, Robert L. Monette, lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, May 3, at his home in Solebury, Pa.
Bob was born in Lawrence on November 6, 1951, to Paul L. and Jacqueline F. (Morin) Monette. Born with spina bifida and many physical problems, Bob was given only a few days to live, and his parents were advised to prepare themselves for his demise. Instead, he began to thrive, and despite numerous operations and long hospital stays throughout his childhood (where he met visiting Superman (George Reeves) and Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, he managed to receive an elementary education at the Marland School in Andover. Bob always gave enormous credit to his parents for their decision to allow him as normal a childhood as possible, the generosity of Shriners Hospital for Children, and Edna Marland of the Marland School for recognizing his outstanding ability. At the then Andover Junior High School, Bob met his soul mate and future wife, Brenda (Burbine), and he and Brenda would have celebrated 40 years of marriage this August.
Bob was a 1969 graduate of Andover High School, a 1975 summa cum laude graduate of Bentley College, Waltham, and in 1993, earned a Juris Doctor from Villanova Law School, Villanova, Pa. After graduating from college, Bob worked at the then Health, Education and Welfare office in Boston, as a federal auditor. After passing the CPA exam, Bob approached Vincent Lambers of Lambers CPA Review in North Andover, for a chance to teach CPA candidates in the evening Lambers course. There, Bob found his calling as an outstanding instructor and motivational speaker. In 1981, Bob was given the opportunity to purchase a CPA Review course from retiring Philadelphia, financial personality, Harry Gross, later changing the name to Gross-Monette CPA Review and building the course, with the help of other outstanding instructors, into the dominant CPA Review course to take with four locations in the greater Philadelphia area. For over 30 years, Bob helped thousands of students pass the CPA exam through his live instruction, motivation and inspiration. Bob was also nationally known through his videos, cds and online instruction for Bisk Education of Tampa, Fla. In the late 90s, Bob sold his course to national course, Becker CPA Review, for whom he also taught.
Bob was an avid reader, with a keen interest in political/current events, a Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, which he followed by satellite in PA, a highly competitive 45s card player, and a Labrador retriever lover, especially his beloved Scout.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Jackie Monette; his brother, Paul, for whom Bob was the Trustee of the Monette/Horwitz Trust and his in-laws, Henry and Leona Burbine. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda, “special cousin” Bill Harrison, who graciously gave one of his life-saving kidneys to Bob in 2004, his aunt, Claire Morin, numerous cousins, friends, colleagues and his lab, Bella.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 7 at Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover, at 11 a.m. Charitable contributions in Bob’s name may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3551 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140-4131, The Salvation Army, 215 Appletree Drive, P.O. Box 824, Levittown, PA 19058, or Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue, P.O. Box 638, Warrington, PA 18976. Life celebration services provided by Leaver/Cable of Buckingham.
