Boxford - Boxford - Cornelius Joseph McCarthy, a beloved husband, father, and pillar of the Merrimack Valley community, passed away peacefully at his home in Boxford, MA on July 10, 2024, at the age of 88.

Born in Methuen, MA, Cornelius was the son of the late George J. McCarthy and Bertha McCarthy, and brother of the late Eleanor (McCarthy) Otis. He graduated from Punchard HighSchool in Andover, MA, and went on to graduate from Kimball Union Academy. Cornelius thenearned his undergraduate degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of

Pennsylvania. Following his studies, Cornelius completed Officer Candidate School.

Cornelius' career was a testament to his leadership and dedication. He served as President of the C.J. McCarthy Insurance Agency, later renamed The McCarthy Companies, guiding the company to expansive growth and success for more than 40 years before his retirement. His commitment extended far beyond his career. Cornelius served as President of the United Fund,

ensuring vital resources reached those in need. He was also a trustee and board member at Andover Savings Bank, contributing to its financial stability. Cornelius' dedication to healthcare was evident through his roles as a board member for Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen and a Director at the Mary Immaculate Nursing Home and Protectory in Lawrence.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Cornelius was a man of boundless energy and had a love for adventure. He excelled in athletics, playing tennis, football, hockey, and rowing crew. An avid skier and golfer, he enjoyed exploring slopes and golf courses around the world. He was also a talented and passionate gardener, winning countless Topsfield Fair awards for his breathtaking dahlias.

Cornelius' sense of humor and unwavering strength were a constant source of joy for his wife, Alice McCarthy, their children, Cornelia (Richard) DeNey, Evelyn Cole, and George (Stephanie) McCarthy, and his six grandchildren, Nathalie, Matthew Wyatt, Julia, Emily, Sam, and Jack. He was also a devoted "Dog Dad" to Mr. Z.

Cornelius will be remembered for his intelligence, sharp wit, unwavering dedication to his community, and zest for life.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 16th from 4 to 7 p.m. at Conte Funeral Home, 17 3rd Street, North Andover, MA 01845.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Parish, 94 Andover Street, Georgetown, MA 01833, immediately followed by a private burial service at St. Mary-Immaculate Conception Cemeteries & Mausoleum, 55 Hideaway Lane, Methuen MA 01844.

A reception, open to all, will be held Wednesday, July 17th at 2 p.m. at North Andover Country Club, 500 Great Pond Road, North Andover, MA 01845. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the many organizations Cornelius passionately supported, Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, or The Wounded Warrior Project, or MSPCA at Nevins Farm.
