Andover - George Stephen Moran, 75, of Andover, MA, passed away surrounded by his family on December 15, 2024, following a brief, courageous battle with cancer.
George was born on March 12, 1949, in Yonkers, NY, to George W. and Katherine (Hayes) Moran. With his Irish roots and a full head of red hair, he was affectionately known as 'Rusty' in his early years, a nickname that evolved into 'Russ' as he grew older.
He graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York, and briefly contemplated joining the seminary. Ultimately, he chose to pursue sociology at St. Anselm's College in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he met his future wife of 52 years, Mary Angela (Mauriello). Russ and Mary were married on December 30, 1972, in Natick, Massachusetts, and eventually settled in Andover.
After earning a Master's in Public Administration, Russ embarked on a long, prosperous, and fulfilling career in health care management. He held senior management positions at Tufts Health Plan and Private Healthcare Systems before transitioning to health care consulting. In 2006, Russ embraced a new path in academia, serving as adjunct faculty in the MBA, MPH, and Healthcare Informatics programs at Northeastern University. His years as a professor and mentor were among the most rewarding of his life.
Throughout his career, Russ showed a deep passion for helping seniors, serving as the executive director of Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley in the early part of his journey. Most recently, he also held a position on the advisory board for the Andover Council on Aging.
Known for his kindness, optimism, and quiet leadership, Russ had an easy smile and a lifelong curiosity that inspired everyone he met. Russ spent years traveling the world with Mary, exploring new cultures, and pursuing his love of amateur photography and golf. He found joy in the beauty of everyday life, the natural world, and the music of The Beatles.
He was a devoted husband and loving father to his three children and their spouses: Carrie and Brad Rendall of Walpole, Patrick Moran and Michelle Smith of Portland, Maine, and Dennis and Lauren Moran of Walpole. As "Pa" he delighted in playing games, reading stories, and creating cherished memories with his five grandchildren: Jake (Rendall), Willa and Birch (Moran), and Matthew and Ryan (Moran). They will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Christ Church in Andover followed by a celebration of life at 3:30 p.m. at The Autograph Tavern in Andover. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Andover Senior Center or Elder Care Services of the Merrimack Valley.
