East Providence - John Richard Lux, 98, of East Providence, RI, left us peacefully on March 21st, surrounded by his loving family. A beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, coach and teacher, Dick will always be remembered for his kindness and sense of humor.
Born on July 5, 1926, in Rahway, NJ, Dick was the eldest son of Gertrude and John Lux and brother to Ellen Jo and Joseph Phillip. After graduating from Penn State in 1949 with an engineering degree, Dick married Ann Freeman, his wife of 63 years. They moved to Andover, MA where they raised two sons, Rick and Dave.
Dick spent his career teaching mathematics and coaching lacrosse and wrestling at Phillips Academy in Andover. His work as a teacher and coach touched the lives of many students. He authored many math textbooks and served as the Math Department chair. He was inducted into the Andover Athletics Hall of Honor in 2023. He lived in Andover for 73 years, until 2022 when he moved to Rhode Island to be closer to his son, Rick.
Dick is survived by his sons, Rick (Stephanie), East Providence, RI, and Dave (Nancy), Sandpoint, ID as well as three grandchildren, Alice Fawzi (Nick), John Lux (Lyla), and Brady Lux, and five great-grandchildren, John Fawzi, Aline Fawzi, Evangeline Lux, Cypress Lux, and Josiah Lux, and his sister, Jo Watson and sister-in-law Marjorie Lux. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann and brother, Phil.
