Andover - Andover - John F. McNabb Jr, a long-term resident of Andover, Massachusetts passed away on Good Friday, April 18th, 2025. Mr. McNabb was the second of seven children born to John F. McNabb and A. Barbara (Sinnott) McNabb who were lifelong residents of the Saco/Biddeford area in Southern Maine. Both parents predeceased Mr. McNabb.
Affectionately known as either "BePe' or "Papa John" to his grandchildren, Mr. McNabb grew up in Saco, Maine. He graduated from Thornton Academy in 1960 and Colby College in 1964 having majored in Mathematics. While at Colby he played both varsity basketball and golf. He was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Shortly after his graduation his application to attend US Naval Officers Candidate School was accepted and he reported there for active duty in September, this after an intensive summer of golf, body surfing and, as he often recalled, many too many late nights.
Mr. McNabb served as a line officer aboard the USS Johnston (DD-821) from February 1965 until January 1968. Home ported in Charleston, South Carolina the Johnston spent extensive time at sea during Mr. McNabb's tour of duty, making two trips to the Mediterranean (one that included passage through the Suez Canal and on to the Persian Gulf), an extensive training session at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and a trip to the Western Pacific by way of the Panama Canal. He was proud to have served and thought it unfortunate that the elimination of the draft and creation of the volunteer armed services dramatically reduced the numbers of those who served. Mr. McNabb generally subscribed to center-left political views: especially universal, comprehensive and affordable health care coverage for all Americans and affirmative action programs for disadvantaged Americans.
After completing his military service Mr. McNabb attended the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College, earned his MBA in the spring of 1970 at which time he relocated from Maine to Eastern Massachusetts. Mr. McNabb had a very interesting and successful 35-year professional career in accounting and finance, his last position being 20 years as Chief Financial Officer of Rand Whitney Group, a packaging products company with five manufacturing plants in New England.
A long-term member at Andover Country Club, Mr. McNabb was an avid golfer who carried a single digit handicap for most of his life. He finished third in the 1964 New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship. He loved the camaraderie of the various robins and recurring matches that he had at ACC and particularly enjoyed a way too infrequent round of golf with his son, his brothers, his brother-in law Larry Gardner and his lifelong friend Bryce Roberts. After his retirement in 2008, Mr. McNabb and Mr. Roberts took three notable golf trips to Florida, the Chicago area and France and had the opportunity to play some truly great courses. Other highlights of his post-retirement golf travels included playing some beautiful Charlottesville, VA area courses with his brother Steve and playing with his brother Dennis at Beth Page Black on Long Island. Mr. McNabb loved competitive athletics, was a passionate lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and Celtics, and was a fixture at Andover High basketball games.
Mr. McNabb's wife of 35 years, Olimbia "Lolli" Keith McNabb passed away in 2006 at the age of 57. He was also predeceased by his sister Judy and her husband Laurence Gardner (Cheshire, CT), brother in-law James Houle (Scarborough, ME) and sister in-law Sheila McNabb (Portland, ME). He is survived by his daughter Shannon McNabb of Andover, her husband Marcus Gomula and their two children, Hayden (17) and Jack (14); and his son Aaron McNabb of Princeton, Illinois, his wife Whitney and their three daughters, Tessa (12), Nora (10) and Jenna (7). He is also survived by; his brother Dennis and wife Paula (Great Neck, NY); his brother David (Scarborough, ME); his sister Deborah (Scarborough, ME); his brother Jeff (Saco, ME) his brother Stephen and wife LuAnn (Keswick, VA) and all of their many children and grandchildren.
Family was very important to Mr. McNabb. He knew how lucky he was to have been born to loving, caring, supportive and demanding parents and share his entire life with six siblings who he considered among his very best friends. He loved his married life and the adventure that Lolli and he had raising Shannon and Aaron. He particularly enjoyed the many vacation weeks at the seashore; annual trips to Lolli's home town just west of the Adirondacks; extended trips to California, the Caribbean, Florida and Italy; coaching various youth sports teams; and helping Shannon with the financial aspects of her retail clothing business. His trip with Lolli to the 2002 Super Bowl was truly special as was his skiing trip to Whistler with Aaron. As he grew older, he was always excited to attend anniversary parties, the many graduation and wedding celebrations of his children and their many cousins and the many family get-togethers in Maine. He was a very proud grandfather who loved Hayden, Jack, Tessa, Nora and Jenna very much and cherished the time that he was able to share with each of them.
