North Andover - North Andover - Kathleen M. (Carroll) Scanlon, 83, longtime beloved English teacher at Andover High School, died at her home in North Andover, on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Kathleen grew up in South Lawrence, the middle child of Grace and Joe Carroll, and attended St. Patrick's School, where she earned a scholarship to Merrimack College, later completing her master's degree at Boston College. She taught English and American Studies for more than three decades at Andover High, where she was an important member of the faculty, and led the English Department for many years. 'Mrs. Scanlon' brought her love for authors such as Twain, O'Connor, Le Guin, and Heaney to thousands of students, teaching and encouraging them to approach the world with curiosity, critical questions, and well-reasoned, well-written expressions of their own values and voices. With her concise annotations and red pen, she helped shape countless college essays that launched her students (and kids and grandkids) into their next chapter and beyond, earning from many, the title of 'my favorite teacher.'
A life-long learner, Kathleen read voraciously and explored vigorously big ideas and great works of art, transferring that enthusiasm to her family, friends, and students. She most enjoyed times surrounded by her family on Christmas Eve, Sunday dinners, and summertimes at Goose Rocks Beach. She was almost impossible to beat at Scrabble, although sometimes her grandkids would win.
Kathleen is survived by her children: Peter Scanlon, of Newton, MA, Elaine Scanlon, of Andover, MA, Chris Delgado and her husband Tony, of Charlotte, NC, and Bill Scanlon and his partner Cynthia, of Wilmington, MA; her 10 beloved grandchildren: T.D. and his wife Madison, Aidan, Reese, Alexandra, Abby, Liam, Austin, Maggie, Meilani, and Devin; her great-grandson, Dean; her sister Elaine O'Brien and her husband Dick, of Andover, MA, and her brother Paul Carroll and his wife Peg, of Panama City, FL.
Friends, family, and former students are welcome at calling hours Saturday, May 24, 2025, 9:30-10:30A, at Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence Street, Andover, MA, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00A at St. Augustine's Church in Andover.
