Mary Snyder Dow
She was born to Mary Ella (Blue) Snyder and Edward Furnas Snyder on December 9, 1929 in Belle Plaine, Iowa. Mary spent most of her childhood in Orono, Maine, graduating from Orono High School in 1948 and the University of Maine in 1952 with degrees in Sociology and Elementary Education. While at U Maine, she was president of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, senior class treasurer, Winter Carnival Queen, a member of the All-Maine Women's Society and a collegiate field hockey player.
After college, Mary taught in Milton and Fort Bragg, N.C. Following many years of working as a stay-at-home mother to her four children, Mary earned a Master's Degree in Education at Fitchburg State College. Mary enjoyed a 17-year career as a special education teacher helping children with learning disabilities in the Amesbury Public School System. In addition to her professional endeavors, she was a lifetime member of the YMCA and volunteered countless hours to this organization. Mary was a fourth generational member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), sponsoring numerous international exchange students.
Over the years, Mary enjoyed swimming in the ocean, hiking, biking and gardening. She was also an avid bridge player and ballroom dancer. She played the piano effortlessly. In her retirement, Mary enjoyed Caribbean cruises and Elder Hostel trips throughout Europe. Her favorite trip was biking through the colorful tulip fields in Holland. Mary frequently traveled across the country and the Atlantic Ocean to see her children, grandchildren and other friends and family. She spent the last eight years of her life, residing at Elmcroft senior living community in Roswell, Georgia, where she made many new friends.
Mary is predeceased by her infant daughter, Lois Ann Dow, an older brother, Edward F. Snyder, and sister-in-law, Bonnie Snyder. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Ralph Snyder (Mary) of Belfast, Maine, and her four children, Karen Dow of Haverhill, Ginny Hush (Jim) of Marietta, Georgia, Eileen Campbell (Steve) of Brighton, England and Rick Dow of Rochester, Minnesota. She also survived by of eight grandchildren, Catriona, Allison, Rhodie, Stefanie, Tripp, Holden, Theodore and Phineas and a recent great grandmother to Amélie.
A Celebration of Life gathering is planned for the fall.
