North Andover - William C. Drummond, 76, of North Andover died peacefully at Bridges by Epoch in Andover on October 30, 2019. Bill was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the only child of William and Ann Drummond.

After graduating from John Carroll University in 1965, he won a scholarship to attend Boston College, where he received his M.A. He fell in love with New England and started his career teaching mathematics at Malden Catholic High School. After two years he took a job at Andover High School, where he taught for 40 years, retiring in 2009. He continued to do substitute work there until 2016. During his tenure at Andover High, he earned the love and respect of generations of students for his teaching style, his humor, and his commitment to the school in both academic and athletic roles. He was a great communicator and story-teller, delighting his classes with Friday afternoon adventures. For many years he was faculty manager in the athletic department, where he managed all the equipment needs of the teams. He became wellknown in the school as the Voice of Andover Sports, announcing football and basketball games as well as soccer and lacrosse matches. Simply put, Bill loved being with kids and he loved Andover High. Bill's main interest outside his work was birding. He learned to identify birds as he was growing up in Ohio. What made him happiest was sharing this knowledge with other people. He joined the Brookline Bird Club and fast became one of its weekend bird walk leaders. He took his turn as club president and as editor of their ?eld trip booklet. On one of the walks, in Rockport, he met another birder named Barbara, who had just moved from Pittsburgh. They were married in 1980, their reception attended by students from both of their schools. In time, Bill began to lead birdwatching trips outside the state, taking groups to Texas, Arizona, California, and his favorite destination, Alaska. One of his proudest achievements was acquiring 821 species of birds on his North American life list. Bill was also a devoted rail fan and train rider. During his many years of travels he rode the entire Amtrak system, and he rode most of the scenic railroads in the U.S. and Canada. As a member of MassBay Railroad Enthusiasts, he acted as car host on many of their excursions in New England.

As an avid baseball fan, Bill always supported the Cleveland Indians. His other sports love was college football, where he cheered on Ohio State. Most of all, Bill loved people. He thought the best of others, and so he was friendly to everyone. He was a caring teacher, thoughtful friend, and devoted husband. He leaves his loving wife Barbara, of North Andover, and his cousin Peg McDonough and her husband Ralph, of Can?eld, Ohio, and their children and families, and his many friends in the birding community.
